With the rise of sedentary work styles, concerns about the negative effects on our spines have become more prevalent. Sitting for extended periods has been linked to obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. In response to this growing concern, Ariel Levay set out to design a solution that would promote a healthier and more active work environment.
The Experimental Standing Chair stands out from traditional seating options due to its ability to adapt to the user's needs. The chair's adjustable seat allows for easy transition between sitting and standing positions, encouraging users to engage their muscles and avoid the negative consequences of prolonged sitting. Additionally, the chair features a footrest that can be rotated to achieve the most comfortable angle, further enhancing the ergonomic experience.
Constructed primarily from wood, the Experimental Standing Chair combines elegance with durability. To ensure strength and long-term stability, steel parts are strategically incorporated into critical junctions of the chair's design. The furniture's ethereal yet rigid structure maintains its stability while providing a visually appealing aesthetic. The black surface finish adds a touch of sophistication, making it suitable for both home and office settings.
The dimensions of the Experimental Standing Chair are carefully designed to accommodate various body types and provide optimal comfort. At its highest position, the chair measures 1000mm in height, 450mm in width, and 841mm in length. The package dimensions are 700mm in height, 650mm in width, and 1050mm in length, ensuring convenient transportation and storage.
During the design process, Ariel Levay conducted extensive research on effective office working conditions and the harmful effects of sedentary lifestyles. Real-size prototypes were created and tested to refine the chair's ergonomic features and dimensions. The final design, born out of this meticulous research and experimentation, was completed as part of Ariel Levay's Master's degree project at the Moholy-Nagy University of Arts and Design in Hungary.
The Experimental Standing Chair received recognition for its innovative design, winning the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2017. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and technical skill. The chair's incorporation of best practices in art, science, design, and technology contributes to improving the quality of life for users, making it a valuable addition to any space.
By challenging the conventional notion of sitting, the Experimental Standing Chair offers a compelling solution to combat the harmful effects of a sedentary lifestyle. With its unique design and focus on promoting active work habits, this furniture piece exemplifies the intersection of art, architecture, design, innovation, and technology, enhancing the overall lifestyle experience.
